“Worship has been misunderstood as something that arises from a feeling which ‘comes upon you,’ but it is vital that we understand that it is rooted in a conscious act of the will, to serve and obey the Lord Jesus Christ.”
We all worship, (if you do not, start now!), we all love to worship, we all take pride in worship. But unfortunately, our worship these days are limited to songs. There is a new worship song releasing every day, a million dollar industry who understand the demand and supply it, And we listen to these songs, poetic lyrics, powerful declarations and skillful music composition fill our ears and our hearts, we look up to them, try to imitate them, follow them. It’s all good, it is all needed. But many times, our worship is only limited to these songs we hear, the play on words ring in our hearts, the melodious strum of a guitar brings a sense of joy in our hearts, but sadly it stops there. It just becomes a feeling and nothing more than that. When we hear these songs, we feel something inside which we mistake for true worship. Let me tell you, it is not. Songs are good, bands and individuals that make them do the Lord’s work (the devil’s way sometimes, but that’s a discussion for another day).
Why do we count these feelings as true worship? The Bible clearly tells us, worship is much more. We need to understand that what God wants from us is not just a few moments of “music high”, that is not what he desires, he wants true worship to rise from each and every single one of us. It is high time that the church and believer stop obsessing over the musicians and rather focus on the one that is being lifted. No hatred or bad blood against any true Christian musician. But one can’t help but think, are we losing the true meaning of worship from our Christian life and putting it on something that is fleeting and momentary.
The believer needs to understand that our worship is more than the latest worship song, it is more than the latest “Billboard #1 Gospel Music”, and it is our relationship with Christ. There is no point in listening to all these songs, if our lives do not bring out true worship. The Christian needs to realize what Christ is asking for, and it is much more than mere songs. Learning the chords C, F, G and A minor and humming few lines does not bring out the true worship our Lord requires. Worship is a complete surrender. It is complete adoration. Worship is the music your life plays in front of your creator.
