Hope against Hope

“And sometimes, against all odds, against all logic, we still hope.”

We, the human race are notoriously hopeful. When everything around us fills with darkness and smoke, we wait for that light. When there is nothing to hold on to, we still hope. That is a thing of beauty. Hoping against all logic and reasoning. Hoping to a point of impossibility. An excerpt from the diary of Anne Frank reads like this, “I’ve asked myself again and again whether it wouldn’t have been better if we hadn’t gone into hiding, if we were dead now and didn’t have to go through this misery, especially so that the others could be spared the burden. However, we all shrink from this thought. We still love life, we haven’t yet forgotten the voice of nature, and we keep hoping, hoping for everything.”

There are seasons in life that seem without hope, times when we are discouraged, struggling and feeling our faith slip. Sometimes it feels like our quiet whispered prayers cannot possibly be heard or that this circumstance is just too big for God to handle. We would never speak that aloud yet there are moments, in the midst of difficulty, that these thoughts take place in the corners of our minds. When this happens, we can know we are not alone in our wondering, our doubts, our fears or our questions.

Hope is a powerful force and probably the most important factor when it comes to overcoming life’s biggest challenges. Without it, everything is lost. They say that in certain tragic situations only mad men can keep their hope alive. However, that little spark eventually pulls them from despair. Hope has the power to make you do the impossible. While it is hard to be optimistic during difficult times, think of it as your only weapon use it to fight and you will eventually find your way out. Do not just sit there waiting for the worst to happen because there is always one more thing that you can do. You just have not thought about it yet.

Some people are more optimistic and hopeful by nature, but even they need a little reassurance, every now and then, that things will get better. Look around, you maybe the most optimistic person on earth, but even at the darkest nights, you have heard that whisper of doubt in your ears. When you hope, things are more likely to turn out the way you want them to. Why? Because you are willing to do everything, it takes to make it happen. When hope seems lost, keep hoping. It never dies, it never gets #cancelled.

When you are at the end of your rope, tie a knot and hold on.
