While I Wait

“While I wait, I will worship, I will trust You, Lord, I’ll trust you all the same”

When Lincoln Brewster penned these words, we didn’t know that we would need these words now, more than ever. In a busy world, fast moving, no time for anyone or anything, it is interesting to see the world, Wait! Now waiting is not something everyone enjoys. From waiting for a call back after an interview, or waiting on a customer service executive or even the single second after the traffic signal turns green. Nobody wants to wait, we are all in a rush. But now all that has changed, everything waits, in patience.

“There’s a sense in which God is never silent. He has already spoken in his word and by becoming man and dying for us on the cross, purchasing our eternal salvation. This is speech, and speech is not silence! What we call God’s silence may actually be our inability, or in some cases our unwillingness, to hear him. Fortunately, that hearing loss for God’s children need not be permanent. And given the promise of resurrection, it certainly won’t be permanent”
“Uncertainty has many faces. It includes questions, doubts, ambiguity, and the discovery that persons or things are not quite what we expected. In essence, uncertainty is a reflection of the gap between our desire for the ideal and our experience of reality. The ideal represents how we think things ought to or should be; reality is how things actually are. While we wait, why can’t we worship? Why can’t we praise Him for what he has done? Why can’t we trust him to handle this situation and give us a deliverance in the best way possible?

Martin Luther’s wife, Katherine, saw him discouraged and unresponsive for some time. One day she dressed in black mourning clothes. Luther asked her why. “Someone has died,” she said. “Who?” Luther asked. “It seems,” Katherine said, “that God must have died!” Luther got her point. Since God hadn’t died, he needed to stop acting as if he had.

Life’s waiting room is a place where time seemingly stands still. It is a place where life is put on hold. When we are in the waiting room of life, it seems as if progress has come to a screeching halt. This is how it feels sometimes while we wait on the Lord. It may seem slow, it may seem like it is taking forever, but when we let go of our urge to have control over everything and when we learn to give God control, the waiting doesn’t seem so difficult, because when we live life knowing that God is up there, taking care of things, we rest in His assurance, and while we wait, we worship Him, we trust Him more.

“Teach us, O Lord, the disciplines of patience, for to wait is often harder than to work”
