“Sometimes God lets you hit rock bottom just to let you know that he is the rock at the bottom”
Sometimes at the height of trouble, when your life just won’t get right, when pain seems to triumph over all the other emotions you are feeling, when you just can’t shake of that feeling that your life is headed to a great failure and you look around for a familiar face, you look around for a warm embrace, when you look around for God and you wonder if he left you? And your heart takes a stab and you shed a tear, always remember, not for a moment will he forsake you. Not – for – a – moment. Why? Simply because he said so.
For what we need to know, of course, is not just that God exists, not just that beyond the steely brightness of the stars there is a cosmic intelligence of some kind that keeps the whole show going, but that there is a God right here in the thick of our day-to-day lives, as we move around down here knee-deep in the fragrant muck and misery and marvel of the world. It is not objective proof of God’s existence that we want but, the experience of God’s presence. That is the miracle that we are really after, and that is also, I think, the miracle we get. When the world runs around science and existentialism and philosophies to prove whether he’s there or not, all it takes for us is a beating heart and a breath in your lungs to know that he’s there. As long as you life in you, he’s right by your side. And no matter how difficult or impossible it is to believe that, he’s there. Just got to trust it.
God’s promise gives the sense that God is in our corner, that God is somehow by our side as we face our battles and our sufferings in this world. We lay hold of the promise by exercising courage in the wake of God’s presence with us.
We lay hold of the promise by practicing spiritual disciplines. In those seasons when God seems absent to us, it’s important that we do what we can to be present to Him. Keep on praying even if you feel like God has His fingers in His ears. Keep on staying in the Scripture even when the Scripture seems like nothing more than paper and ink, and you get nothing from what you read. Keep on worshiping even when your heart is empty and your praise seems hollow. And always remember, there’s nothing you can do that’ll make Him leave you and forsake you, so Relax! He’s around!
Not for a moment, will He forsake you.
