“To know that God knows everything about me and yet loves me is indeed my ultimate consolation.”

He Is Omniscient. He Knows You Fully and Loves You Still

There is a fear that lives underneath much of our spiritual life, and it goes something like this: if God really knew everything about me, not just what I let him see, but everything, he would not still love me.

It is why so many people keep parts of themselves hidden even in prayer. Why confessing certain things feels genuinely terrifying. Why the idea of being truly, completely known produces anxiety rather than comfort.

Psalm 139 is David’s extended meditation on the fact that God knows him completely. Every word before it forms on his tongue. Every moment, wherever he goes. The darkness that feels like a hiding place is not dark to God. He was known before he was born, knit together in a place he could not see. There is not one square inch of David’s interior life that God has not already searched.

And here is the thing that should change everything: David does not write this as a confession of terror. He writes it as a song. The knowledge of God is not surveillance. It is not the cold omniscience of a database that stores your mistakes for future reference. It is the intimate, comprehensive knowing of a Father who made you, sustains you, and pursues you and who, having seen all of it, loves you anyway. David knows that God has seen him in not just his best moments but also in moments of doubt, running away and his controversial moments as well. He was a king who always had people surrounding him who tells him he is great and loved him, but he knew that nobody knew him and loved him like the one he sang about.

This is, when you really think about it, the only love worth having. A love built on partial information is fragile. If someone loves you because they only know your best side, there is always the quiet dread that when they see the rest, the love will end. But a love that has already seen everything including the things you have never told anyone and has not withdrawn? That love cannot be taken by surprise. It will not suddenly discover something that changes the verdict.

You are not partially known and fully loved. You are fully known and fully loved. There is nothing more to reveal that would alter what God already knows and already decided about you before the foundation of the world.

This is the truth that should finally put that fear to rest.
