He Is Faithful. When Everything Else Shifts
The book of Lamentations does not open in a comfortable place. It is a book of raw grief, written in the wake of Jerusalem’s destruction. The city is in ruins. The temple, the physical dwelling of God’s presence has been burned. The people are in exile. And in the middle of all of that, Jeremiah writes one of the most quoted passages in the whole Bible about the faithfulness of God.
This is not a man writing from a season of blessing. This is a man sitting in the rubble, choosing to remember.
Faithfulness is, at its core, about consistency. A faithful person, or a faithful God, is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Their character does not bend under pressure, does not shift with circumstances, does not depend on how they are feeling on any given morning. What they have said, they will do. What they have promised, they will keep.
In a world that often rewards novelty and change, faithfulness can seem like a quiet virtue. But for anyone who has lived through betrayal, disappointment, or loss, faithfulness is the most precious thing in the world.
We know something about unfaithfulness. We know what it is to have someone we trusted turn out to be something other than what they appeared. We know what it is to rely on a person or a system or a plan, only to have it fail. These experiences leave marks. They make trusting harder. They make rest harder. They produce a subtle, low-grade anxiety, the sense that things you depend on might not hold.
The faithfulness of God is the antidote to exactly that.
Every morning that comes is not just another day, it is evidence. It is God keeping his word again. The mercy is new every morning, Jeremiah says. Not recycled. Not diminished by how much you drew on it yesterday. New. Replenished. As full at dawn as it has ever been.
You may have been let down by people you trusted. You may carry the weight of that. But there is someone who has never broken his word, not once, not to anyone, not ever. His track record is perfect. And that perfect track record is the ground on which you can lay your full weight, today and every day. Every day that I wake up, this fuels me, it keeps me going, knowing full well that I can put the entirety of my being on Him, it is safe there.
