The Promise
“To prepare our hearts for Christmas, we must cultivate the spirit of expectancy.”
It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Once again we are in the time of the year where everything is starting to look more red and green and music in the playlists are more Jingle Bell than anything else. And no matter how you look at it, people might be a little more cheerful, maybe it is the break that awaits everyone finally. Maybe it is the excitement that the year is finally getting over, 2024 is just going to be there only for a few more weeks, and just before we know it, it is adieu to this year.
Yes, there is a lot of struggle behind the rejoicing. Maybe the happiness is just contagious, maybe there’s nothing to be happy about in our lives right now, but the general happiness around us right now, isn’t just all fake, there is some truth to it. Being in a place of pain and struggle is something that nobody wants, but the one thing that can change the situation, even when you’re in the darkest space of pain, is simply a Promise. A promise can change the way we look at the pain around us. The promise of a better tomorrow will help us get through the trying today. Centuries ago there was a group of people who desperately needed help, a people who were lost, who did not know where to go, whose life would have amounted to nothing if not for a promise. A promise made centuries ago, a promise given for their time of need. A promise that was forgotten but in the right time, that promise was born, in a lowly manger. Today, years later the world in which this promise was born, celebrates it, because this promise means everything to this world.
This promise is the final word for hopelessness, this promise is what gives every single human being a reason to be joyful. This promise gives us the hope that even though today can be difficult, tomorrow could be mine. Although it is dark now, the sun will rise tomorrow and I no longer have to be in that place of emptiness and brokenness, this promise guarantees this humanity a future and a home. And today we cheer that promise, we merry and rejoice, even when we can’t find a reason, we still go all out in our jubilee because we know what this promise means. The season is slowly taking full effect and it is easy to be lost in the commercial glamour of things but in the middle of all that, find the promise, receive the promise and live a life that is filled with the promise.
