“Father, into your hands I commit my spirit”
“Easter was when Hope in person surprised the whole world by coming forward from the future into the present”
The eyes of everyone is on that cross, the saviour is in the final moments of his time on the cross. Death is approaching to embrace the Lamb of God. At the moment as he is about to finish it once and for all, Jesus cries out these words, “Father, into your hands I commit my Spirit”. Jesus quotes Psalms 31:5 here on the Cross. Tradition has it that Psalm 31:5 was the prayer Jewish fathers taught their children to pray every night at bedtime. As darkness would fall over the house, a Jewish father would pray with his children, “Into Your hands I commit my Spirit.”
It began with the Father and it ended with the Father. Standing at the foot of the cross, we know that it is not an ordinary death, it was a wilful sacrifice. It was when the darling of heaven came down for earth’s rejected.
Jesus died and was buried. Three days later He came back to life. God raised Him from the dead. The moment He was raised from the dead, He defeated death. Jesus became victorious over death.
You may wonder, it’s just another event in history, but it is a big deal! He defeated an enemy that has been overpowering humanity since Adam and Eve fell in the garden. Because He was victorious over death, if you are in Christ Jesus, trusting in Him as your Lord and Saviour, then you are going to be victorious over death also. The death of Jesus is important because He beat it. Because He beat it, we will beat it. Jesus on the Cross kept quoting the scriptures. “You squeeze Jesus, He pours out Bible. You pierce Jesus and He bleeds Bible. You put Him in the desert, starve Him and put Satan right beside Him to tempt Him, and He speaks Scripture. Put Him on the cross and torture Him, and He speaks Scripture. He comes to the dying moments of His life and He’s speaking Scripture.”
Jesus came down to this Earth with a purpose, a divine purpose commissioned to Him by the Father. He successfully completed the task he was entrusted with and he went to Heaven, where He sits at the right hand of the Father.
Over the last couple of days, the sufferings Jesus had to go through was mentioned, he didn’t do all these just to get into the history books, He did it so that we can have an eternal life. He did it so that this orphan heart can be given a name, so that this life of ours will have a meaning and a purpose. He is Risen! And he has bought the price for our redemption! And that calls for a celebration, a celebration that should echo throughout our lives, a celebration we must embrace till our life on earth is done.
My freedom began before I began because down came Calvary’s Cavalry!
