“The greatness of God is not just that He is big enough to rule the world, but gracious enough to care about you.”
We have seen him as holy, loving, good, patient, just, faithful, all-knowing, present, gracious, and sovereign. And through all of it, there has been one quiet assumption threading everything together, that the God we are describing is the same today as he was in every story we have looked at.
That assumption has a name. It is called immutability, the unchanging nature of God. And it is, in many ways, the attribute that makes all the other attributes trustworthy.
Think about it this way. If God were not unchanging, his love might cool. His patience might run out. His faithfulness might have a limit. His grace might one day be reconsidered. His promises might be subject to revision. Without immutability, every other attribute is provisional.
But Malachi 3:6 is not provisional. “I the Lord do not change.” The God who was faithful to Abraham is the same God who is faithful to you today. The God who was patient with Moses is the same God who has been patient with you across every year of your life. The God who showed grace to Peter after his three-fold denial is the same God who extends grace to you in your worst moments.
This is not a God who evolves with the culture, modifies his standards based on public opinion, or recalibrate’s his love based on how you have done this week. He is not trending. He is not a revised edition of himself. He is in the truest sense of that word, the same yesterday, today, and forever. Our lives go through constant change, the people in our circles come and go, our jobs may change, the way we look at the world may change, science may re-write itself, philosophies will be disputed, ideologies may go obsolete, the world around us as we know might come crumbling down one day, yet He stays!
A God who is holy, loving, good, patient, just, faithful, all-knowing, present, gracious, sovereign, and unchanging, this is not a God you relate to out of fear or obligation. This is a God you run toward. This is a God worth trusting with the things that terrify you, worth worshipping with the best of what you have, worth building your whole life around. He is not just trusted for His words, which is the most comforting presence for a person but it is also for who He Is.
And he is not finished with you yet.
