He Is Gracious. He Gives What We Cannot Earn
We live in an achievement culture. From the moment we are old enough to be assessed in school, in sport, in work, in social media we learn that reward follows performance. You do well, you get praised. You fall short, you feel the gap. It is the air we breathe.
And then we bring that same operating system to our relationship with God, often without even noticing. We keep score. We feel closer to God on the days we prayed more. We feel guilty approaching him on the days we failed. We earn our way in on good weeks and slink in apologetically on the bad ones. The idea that standing with God could be entirely disconnected from our performance feels almost dangerous, like it would remove all motivation to try.
Grace is the theological term for what God gives that no one earns, and the news it carries is both the most liberating and the most difficult thing for religious people to accept.
The Greek word is charis, unmerited favour. Not favour in proportion to merit. Not favour that you secure by being good enough, trying hard enough, or showing up consistently enough. Favour that flows entirely from the character of the giver, not the record of the receiver.
This is what separates Christianity from every other religious system. Every other system, at its core, is about what you do to reach God. The Christian gospel is about what God has already done to reach you. The initiative, the cost, and the completion all belong to him. You bring nothing to the table except your need. He paid a price I couldn’t pay, He climbed a hill I couldn’t reach and he loves me to a way I can never love him back. Everything was done by Him, all I had to do was come to Him and yet sometimes I fail at it.
This does not produce laziness. People who truly understand grace become the most transformed, most generous, most grateful people you will ever meet. Because love freely given, love that cost everything and asked nothing in advance produces a response that duty never could.
You cannot earn what you already have. And you cannot lose what was never based on your performance. That is grace. And it is the most destabilising, most beautiful truth in the universe. Every soul that ever lived and every soul that is to come lives life in this truth, some realise it, some don’t.
