‘Woman! Behold thy son. Behold thy mother’
This is the third time Christ spoke from the cross as recorded by writers.
Thinkers and scholars have debated and presented their understanding on this and on how to approach what is said here. Whatever your understanding is on this, one thing that the world agrees on is the love that Jesus portrays through these words. At that state of suffering and pain, he still looks at his loved one and has concern for her. Even on the cross, as he is coming to the end of his life on earth, he still cares for his mother. He remembered his mother on the cross, he remembered because he also died for her. Mary just lost a son, and that too in the cruellest way one could die, it was too much for a mother to watch, to see her own son go through that intense level of pain and suffering and that too despite being innocent. The most beautiful thing is even in that height of suffering, hanging from that cross he knew his mother’s heart. He was a perfect son and the perfect saviour. While dying for humanity, he was also concerned for his mother. Christ truly embodied Love. He taught and showed us what true love is. The world is filled with people who talk about love but not a lot of people who practise, and then comes this guy who taught it, showed it and displayed it in the grandest and greatest way possible.
“God proved His love on the Cross. When Christ hung, and bled, and died, it was God saying to the world, ‘I love you.’” And my friend, you still think that there is no one to care for you? You still worry and panic when there is trouble in your life? Your parents, loved ones or friends may say that they love you on a constant basis, but one man told he loves you by dying on the cross. It doesn’t get better than this. So next time when there is pain and suffering in your life, do not lose hope, because trust me, if anyone knows pain and suffering, it is Jesus and he is right next to you to comfort you and to tell you that he will always be by your side and he will open ways to make sure you are happy and at peace. He died for everyone, and he is concerned about everyone. The same person, who looked at his mother and had concern for her, still lives and looks at what you are going through and how much more concern do you think he has for your life? He cares for you, because if he could do it on the cross, he can do it still.
